The hospital will be funded through a $325 million budget allocation and will replace Northville, Mich.-based Hawthorn Center, a current state psychiatric hospital, according to an April 17 news release from the state. It will care for patients at the Hawthorn Center and Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital in Westland, Mich., two aging facilities that both serve nearly 200 patients combined.
Construction is slated to begin in fall 2023 and wrap in 2026. During construction, Hawthorn patients will be transferred to Walter P. Reuther.
