5 fast facts on women’s mental health

Rates of mental health issues and conditions are on the rise among Americans of all demographics, and women are no exception.

Here are five statistics offering insight into the mental health of women in the U.S., using 2021 data from the National Institute on Mental Health:

1. In 2021, 22.8% of adults age 18 or older in the U.S. experienced a mental illness, with a higher prevalence among women (27.2%) than men (18.1%).

2. The percentage of women with any mental illness who received mental health treatment was 51.7%.

3. Seven percent of women experienced a serious mental illness.

4. Of women who experienced a serious mental illness, 67.6% received mental health treatment.

5. From 2001-2004, 51% of female adolescents ages 13-18 experienced a mental disorder.
