West Springs Hospital, part of Mind Springs Health, will close March 10, according to a statement from the hospital’s board of directors. The hospital is ending its inpatient operations, but Mind Springs will continue to provide outpatient services, according to the board.

Challenges with Medicaid funding and underutilization at the 48-bed facility were factors behind the decision to close.

Mind Springs Health is exploring different care models to meet acute mental health needs outside an inpatient setting, said Carlos Cornejo, the organization’s board chair.

“We are evaluating the possibility of standing up an acute treatment unit, or even a crisis stabilization unit,” Mr. Cornejo added. “Some of our community partners want us to explore that option.”

West Springs Hospital is the second psychiatric facility in Colorado to close in 2025. Johnstown (Colo.) Heights Behavioral Health, a 92-bed hospital will close by the end of March. The closure will affect more than 150 employees.
